Our Story

The Kuttage Artisan Boutique is a place of humble beginnings. It is a place for local nature-friendly craftspeople to thrive.  It did not occur by happenstance. There was a brilliant mind behind all, sewing factors together to allow one, Erica Simpson, to envision a goal and pursue it to its end.

Approximately six months before, a plan was formulated: there is going to be a place for craft items to be sold but it will be one hundred percent (100%) local. It was not apparent how.  It was not apparent when. It was apparent however, that Erica Simpson decided it would happen. Evolving from her own passion for craft and sustainability, she decided to explore the possibilities. That led her to the Radisson Hotel in search of suitable space.

After a seeming failure to procure a space at the Radisson, Erica left not at all discouraged but quite optimistic. It was some time later that the seeming failure would be converted to a victory. She was offered a larger space than that originally requested.

The next step was to determine if it was worth sharing. Being community spirited, Erica made the decision to share the space with other artisans. They would be the “start-up crew” A community striving toward making a difference. A team doing what needed to be done. This team would come to define the spirit of the Kuttage. That spirit had to be shared by those wishing to participate in the initiative.

Today, the Kuttage is right where it’s supposed to be, in a beautiful, open space with over thirty artisans at the service of all those who are interested.  Don’t be mistaken, this is not a store. The Kuttage is an Artisan Boutique operated and cared for by the artisans themselves, making it a purely creative space and a haven for the craftspersons involved. Usually open from 8 AM to 9 PM, The Kuttage is an all-day space.

“This is an artisan space. We do arts and handcrafted products. Each product is an extension of the crafter. We are totally local.”

It is NOT:

  • A souvenir store
  • A space for traders
  • A retail outlet

The purpose of this space:

To add value to the business of local craftspeople and to elevate the standard of the public’s perception of craft. In other words, to promote the business of craft.

If you are interested in becoming part of the initiative, there are some questions to consider:

  • Do you do handcraft?
  • Is each product you provide created by you as a      manifestation of your imagination and labour?
  • Are you in Trinidad and Tobago?
  • Do you enjoy community?
